Local student volunteers visit parliament
I welcomed a group of staff and students from Droitwich Council for Voluntary Services to Westminster this week. The group had the opportunity of a tour of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords chambers, and then had an interactive session with Parliament’s Educational Services team. At the end of their visit I joined them for a chat and then a question-and-answer session.
I was impressed by the political interest shown by the students, who came up with a variety of questions for me, including asking me to describe a typical day as an MP. I discussed my work in Parliament with the group, describing to them on the work done by MPs both inside and outside the Chamber in Committees and meetings, and dealing with a large and diverse correspondence bag.
Georgie Stevens, the Course Tutor who accompanied the trip told me afterwards that the group had a very informative, highly engaging tour and an excellent, interactive and inspirational work shop on making laws. She said it was extremely beneficial to all students who are now more aware of our political system, how it works and how it impacts their daily lives. She added that all students should be given the opportunity to visit!”
It was a great pleasure to host these young people who are interested in the work of Parliament and Westminster. Parliament is everybody’s building, and I encourage all of my constituents to come and visit - and schools should particularly take advantage of the sessions offered by the excellent Educational Services team. Schools can phone 020 7219 4496 to find out how to book a school visit, and how to claim subsidies to help with transport for the trip.
Droitwich CVS offers opportunities for young people aged between 16 and 18 years across Worcestershire to attend an accredited learning and work skills programme. The programme is designed to give young people the chance to upgrade qualifications in English and Maths as well as to gain valuable experience and accredited skills in such areas as Motor Vehicle and Adult and Child Care.
