I was delighted to visit Swan lane First School on Friday 10th February and get the opportunity to talk to the children in an assembly as well as meet the school council.
I told an impressively quiet and attentive audience about what it is like to be an MP and was pleased to see a lot of hands raised when I asked how many of the children might want to get involved in politics themselves when they were older. It was also a pleasure to sit down with the school council from Year 5, who were full of exciting ideas about things they wanted to add to their school. The council have made plans for a new kitchen as well as solved the problem of an overcrowded playground with their innovative "welly week", which sees one year play on the field instead of the playground each week (footwear dependent!). The children on the council also kept me on my toes with some incisive questions about my work in Parliament.
I would like to extend my thanks to Head Teacher Ruth Roberts and Assistant Head Chris Forrester, who made me feel very welcome and organised my meeting with the council. Having not been able to meet the children of Swan Lane when they came to visit Parliament I was very glad to see them all and hear about all of the fantastic work that is being done by children and staff alike.
