Last Friday local campaigner John Cook and myself met with representatives from Network Rail at Chawson’s Coleford level crossing to discuss their ongoing concerns about safety at the crossing.
The matter was brought to my attention by Mr Cook, of Oakleigh Road, who was concerned about the safety and condition of the crossing. Having seen the crossing on a previous visit, I insisted that rail chiefs reassess the site.
After close inspection and discussions with myself and Mr Cook, Level Crossings Manager Chris Williams, agreed that Network Rail would look again at the state of disrepair of the crossing gate, and discuss the condition of the steep path leading to the crossing with Highways at the county council, to see if they can work together.
Mr Cook is also asking for automatically locking gates to be installed to improve safety, along with warning lights, to alert residents when a train is coming.
There are clearly issues with the maintenance of the site. Network rail has said previously that the crossing is fit for use but local residents remain concerned that it is dangerous. I am pleased that they will look again at the issue and discuss it with the county council.
I pay tribute to John for the way he has tirelessly campaigned for improvements to be made on this site for more than 20 years, to keep members of his local community safe. I hope we can soon he get the results he seeks – having spoken to him I know he certainly won’t be giving up until he does.
