The Prime Minister announced last night that she will be meeting with Jeremy Corbyn to try and agree a plan that will enable us to leave the European Union with a deal.
The parliamentary arithmetic is such that the Government has found it impossible to secure a majority for its Withdrawal Agreement. And as many of you will know, in the recent ‘indicative votes’ process no other alternative secured a majority either. Given that opinions of some of my colleagues are so entrenched, it has not been possible thus far to find a compromise solution from within the Conservative Party ranks alone. This inevitably means any resolution will require reliance on some Opposition votes.
I believe this most recent move is a genuine attempt by the Prime Minister to find a solution that delivers on the promise that both the Labour Party and Conservative Party committed to – to deliver Brexit – in their election manifestos of 2017. Opinion on the form of Brexit continues to divide Parliament and the country but we must all act responsibly and that will mean compromising and recognising that none of us will get 100% of what we want.
