Yesterday, in the House of Commons, I asked the Minister of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Margot James, whether the new powers for the Information Commissioner's Office could be used to fine companies, like WhatsApp, for data breaches - with the proceeds of the fine potentially going to support the work of our security services in keeping us safe online.
The Urgent Question came after reports confirmed that hackers have been able to remotely install surveillance software on phones and other devices using a major vulnerability in the WhatsApp messaging service.
WhatsApp advises its users to update their apps as an added precaution.
