During Questions to my Ministry of Justice colleagues yesterday, I asked the Prisons Minister to join me in thanking the prison officers and all staff on the estate of HMP Long Lartin for all that they do. I subsequently asked what steps the Government was taking to ensure we have an adequate number of prison officers and what they were doing to retain staff.
Last Friday I had the pleasure of visiting Long Lartin to present awards for officers who had completed over twenty years of service. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the challenges they face day-to-day, and what additional support they feel could assist them in keeping them safe whilst carrying out their important jobs.
