I want to briefly update my constituents on the situation in Afghanistan. The Government’s immediate priority right now is to make sure we deliver on our obligations to UK nationals in Afghanistan, and our obligations to all those who have assisted the British mission in Afghanistan over the last twenty years. We must get these people out of the country as fast and as safely as possible, and my colleagues across government are working as hard as possible to facilitate this.
However, this is clearly a fast-moving situation. I echo the Prime Minister’s call for there to now be a coordinated and concerted effort from the international community in the coming months to tackle the extremist threat and address the humanitarian emergency in Afghanistan.
