I was really pleased to visit Mill House Stables at The Cropthorne Stud last week to honour National Racehorse Week which ran from 12th-19th September. National Racehorse Week is an annual celebration of the racehorse and provided a great chance for the local MP to get up close and personal with the 90 horses in livery at these stables and see first-hand the care and attention that goes into their training.
I spent the afternoon at the stable, in wellies, with trainer and owner Tony Carroll and Martyn Palmer. He was shown around the stables and was able to meet some of the horses – 72 out of the 90 already being winners this year.
This local stables employs 40 people and draws on the resources and services of surrounding vets, blacksmiths, suppliers and, of course, riders and forms a part of the £4.1 billion generated through horse racing.
It was an incredibly insightful afternoon seeing and hearing about the hard work that goes into making sure these horses are fighting fit to race. And it was mesmerising to see them galloping around the track.
