We are fortunate to have so many historic and beautiful buildings and places of worship in Worcestershire. While it may not be as old as some others, the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart and Saint Catherine of Alexandria in Droitwich Spa nevertheless is an absolute gem.
Open to worshippers and visitors who wish to enjoy its splendid architecture, mosaics and sculptures, it is well worth visiting.
Upon entering you feel like you have been transported to northern Italy and indeed will be surrounded by Murano glass. Tens of thousands of carefully positioned small pieces make up the colourful mosaics.
I was delighted to be shown around by Peter Vella recently. We discussed fundraising and a potential national lottery heritage fund bid to help with restoration of the interiors and to preserve the incredibly impressive 'cartoon' original drawings that were templates for the mosaics.
Over the coming weeks and months a team will be put together to help support fundraising and submit a lottery fund bid. If you have a passion for this project or expertise that may help support these efforts please let my office know via [email protected].
