Over the last few weeks many historical and heritage locations across Worcestershire opened their doors to the public as part of the national Heritage Open Days initiative. Among the notable sites was the Almonry in Evesham.
Nigel Huddleston MP joined in the event, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Worcestershire and the important role played by the Almonry in preserving and showcasing the region's history. The Almonry, a 14th/early-15th century building, holds a unique place in the community as the former home of the Almoner, one of the monks from the Benedictine Abbey founded in the 8th century.
The Almonry has undergone a fascinating transformation throughout history, serving various purposes, including as an ale house, offices, tea rooms, and a private residence. Today, it’s a museum centre, curated by Evesham Town Council, where visitors can immerse themselves in Worcestershire's diverse history.
Guests have the opportunity to explore the Almonry's remarkable collection spanning from the prehistoric era to the 20th century. Exhibits are displayed across two floors and the picturesque garden, with a focus on the evolution of Evesham through time. Visitors can delve into exhibitions about the Abbey, the historic battle of Evesham in 1265, local horticulture, archaeology, fossils, and even step back in time with a visit to a Victorian school room.
This year's Heritage Open Days event provided an exceptional opportunity for the public to discover and appreciate the historical treasures preserved at the Almonry.
