The Government has announced £101 million of funding that will help make it easier and safer to choose to cycle or walk. This includes £460,000 for Westlands in Droitwich for a new pedestrian crossing on the A38 island, with further funding from Worcestershire County and Wychavon District Councils bringing the total up to £1 million.
Connecting the estate to the economic opportunities of the town, the funding is an important step to help enable those in Westlands to be able to better access Droitwich town centre and its associated social and economic benefits. Furthermore, with safety and accessibility at the heart of Active Travel, the pedestrian crossing will address the current safety risks at the busy A38 roundabout and, most significantly, will be both wheelchair-friendly and cycle-friendly.
I am delighted to hear of the funding allocated to my constituency for a pedestrian crossing across the A38 in Droitwich. I know the huge impact it will make for many residents in Droitwich, and its positive impact on jobs and the local economy.
This funding is something that I, alongside Councillors Mike Rouse and Richard Morris, have long campaigned for. I pay tribute to their hard work and perseverance in securing this vital funding for Droitwich.
